Claire Krueger : April 6th, 2016

Hey listeners!

Sarah and I are on ‘Spring Break’ this week, and I’m posting from Joshua Tree, California. It is so beautiful and serene out here…

Anyway, my guest today is Claire Krueger. We chatted about film, perfectionism, and our issues with patience & commitment…(I’m somewhat kidding about my patience.)

Though Claire dabbles in many forms of art, film is the main emphasis of her creative output. Many of her films are mixed media, or maybe a better way to say it is mixed techniques—such as diorama sets, green screening, and animation. Visually, there is usually vibrant colors and dreamlike imagery (see her film ‘The Passenger’ above.)

As you may gather from the interview, there is a wit and humor to Claire. This definitely shows in her work, in subtle ways. It’s something I really appreciate about her art. Along with this well executed wit, I think there is a certain amount of mystery and vagueness to her work that leaves the audience with questions. I feel this works in her favor, bringing the viewer back again and again.

It’s the middle of the week, listeners. You know what that means….

I figured since the Blind Date Anniversary Party is coming up, and the fact that I’ve been interviewing like mad, I’d give you extra tidbits to hold you over. Today’s guest should more than do. Chervon Koeune is her name, and she is a local experimental musician who also has started the Oso osO  series of experimental music nights. In the world of experimental music, much of it is about pushing boundaries; for the musicians themselves and for the listeners. The results usually challenge the listener and, in some cases, endanger their health ( have you ever heard of Danger music?). Chervon is definitely on the lighter side of the spectrum, as she has considered her audience but with little compromise in what she wants creatively. With her latest EP,  Klik. Klak., she has managed to create music that is accessible, melodic, and playful.

Thematically, she is more concerned with creating a mood and with the composition of each piece. The percussion is mainly comprised of found sounds pieced together to create the rhythm section. This backed by Chervon’s vocal harmonies and flourishes with a dash of guitar make for a very lush sonic environment. The feel is a touch of the mystical and calm psychedelia.

You can see this potential in her first EP Banyan Tree…kind of like she’s promising you more. And I think she’s made good on that.
